Jan Temme de Vries is a researcher at the University of Basel, affiliated with the Faculty of Humanities and the Department of Musicology. He is associated with Prof. Dr. Hanna Walsdorf's chair and works in the Musicological Seminar in Basel.
He studied Musicology (M.A.) and Theology (Mag. Theol.) at the universities of Freiburg, Vienna, and Oslo. His previous roles included work as a research assistant in dogmatics and liturgical science, as well as a tutor for historical notation.
His research focuses on hymnology and liturgical music in Protestant areas of Central Germany, the North Sea coast, and Scandinavia from the 16th to 19th centuries, alongside Old Germanic philology and the connections between religious belief, culture, and music. He has published academic articles on church music and reviews of academic publications, scores, and recordings.
As a guest researcher, he has worked at the Center for Grundtvigforskning in Aarhus, the Fryske Akademy in Leeuwarden, and the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. He is based at the Musikwissenschaftliches Seminar in Basel (Petersgraben 27, 4051 Basel, Switzerland).
