Jan Reinoud Buitenweg

Jan Reinoud Buitenweg serves as Full Professor and Department Chair of Biomedical Signals and Systems at the University of Twente's Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science. He leads the Nociceptive and Somatosensory Processing research track and maintains affiliations with both the Electrical Engineering group and TechMed Centre.

His academic foundation includes an M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering with Biomedical specialization (1998) and a Ph.D. (2001) from the University of Twente, where his dissertation examined neuron-microelectrode interface electrical behavior. Research expertise spans Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience, and Neural Engineering with clinical applications in pain management and neuromodulation.

Professor Buitenweg's work focuses on nociception mechanisms, somatosensory processing pathways, and spinal cord stimulation therapies, particularly investigating patient pain thresholds and evoked potentials in neurological conditions like stroke. His translational research bridges electrophysiology with clinical pain management solutions.

As cofounder and statutory director of NociTRACK BV, he actively commercializes research outcomes. His leadership encompasses departmental administration, research track direction, and interdisciplinary collaboration within the TechMed Centre's healthcare technology ecosystem.
