Professor Jan Paradies serves as a Professor and leader of the Organic Chemistry working group at the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of Paderborn. He also holds significant leadership positions as Deputy Chairman of the Center for Optoelectronics and Photonics (CeOPP) and Research Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
Professor Paradies' research focuses on catalytic transformations using main-group element catalysts, with particular emphasis on Frustrated Lewis Pairs (FLP) which enable metal-free hydrogenations, dehydrogenations, hydroaminations, and general reductions. His group develops new FLP-catalyzed transformations and employs physical-organic chemistry to provide mechanistic insights. Another major research direction involves C–S cross-coupling as a molecular tool for constructing densely fused polycyclic heteroacenes, enabling the creation of sulfur-rich heteroacenes with unusual electronic structures.
His recent publications demonstrate expertise across multiple subfields of organic chemistry, particularly in boron-centered Lewis superacids, structure-reactivity relationships in FLP catalysis, sigmatropic rearrangements, and sulfur-rich materials with unique optical properties. His work bridges fundamental organic chemistry with applications in materials science.
Professor Paradies teaches several advanced courses including Organic Chemistry - Advanced Practical Course, Organic Chemistry - Advanced, Modern aspects of synthetic chemistry, and the GDCh Colloquium. His working group maintains active research projects including asymmetric transannular [1,5]-carbon shifts of transiently generated C3 ammonium enolates.
His laboratory is located at Warburger Str. 100, Room J3.202, 33098 Paderborn, Germany, and he can be contacted via email at paradies@mail.uni-paderborn.de or by phone at +49 5251 60-5770.
