Professor Jan Montefiore is a distinguished academic in 20th century English Literature at the University of Kent's School of English. She holds the rank of Professor and specializes in the works of Rudyard Kipling, gender studies, and women’s poetry. As general editor of Kipling titles for Penguin Classics and editor of the Kipling Journal, she has directed multiple international conferences on Kipling’s legacy and co-edited volumes on his writings. Her research also encompasses Sylvia Townsend Warner, W.H. Auden, and post-war British feminist poetry.
Her academic contributions span over four decades, with notable publications including Rudyard Kipling (2007) and edited collections like In Time’s Eye: Essays on Rudyard Kipling (2013). She is a Council member of the Kipling Society, a member of the W.H. Auden Society, and consults on women’s poetry for Liverpool University Press.
Though semi-retired, Montefiore remains active in scholarly activities, including advising Kent postgraduate students and contributing to journals like The Journal of the Sylvia Townsend Warner Society. Her work bridges literary analysis with feminist critique, examining themes of gender, colonialism, and authorship across diverse texts.
