Prof. Jan Miodek is a Full Professor and Head of the Department of the History of the Polish Language at the University of Wrocław's Institute of Polish Philology. Born in 1946, he has been Director of the Institute since 1989. He holds habilitation (1983) and is an honorary doctor of Vilnius Pedagogical University (2016) and University of Opole (2016). His research focuses on Polish language history, dialectology, and sociolinguistics, with over 200 supervised theses.
He leads weekly language columns since 1968 and hosts TV programs like Ojczyzna polszczyzna (1987–2007) and Słownik polsko@polski (2009–present). Key roles include membership in the Polish Academy of Sciences' Linguistics Committee and the Council for the Polish Language. He has lectured globally and edited major works like Proceedings of the Language Commission.
Research interests include Silesian dialects, historical toponymy, and contemporary language evolution. Awards include honorary doctorates and recognition for contributions to Polish linguistics and cultural preservation.
