Jan Marcus

Jan Marcus is Professor for Applied Statistics at the Department of Economics, Freie Universität Berlin, a position he has held since August 2022. His research combines policy-relevant questions with state-of-the-art statistical methods for identifying causal effects, with a focus on health and education economics.

His educational background includes:

• Studies in Political and Administrative Science and International Economics at Konstanz and Istanbul
• PhD with the title "Four Essays on Causal Inference in Health Economics" from the Technical University of Berlin

Professor Marcus specializes in causal inference methodologies and their application to policy evaluation. His research particularly focuses on evaluating policies such as tuition fee introductions, the G8 school reform (which shortened secondary education), voucher programs for sports club memberships, and late-night alcohol sales bans. He is also actively engaged in research aimed at improving scientific processes through replication and reproducibility, with special attention to the importance of replication code availability.

His publication record demonstrates consistent contributions to top economics journals including American Economic Journal: Economic Policy, Journal of Human Resources, Journal of Public Economics, and Journal of Health Economics.
