Jan Lin is a Professor of Sociology at Occidental College, where he has taught since 1998. His research focuses on urban sociology, race and ethnicity, globalization, and gentrification in Los Angeles. He holds a B.A. from Williams College, an M.S. from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and a Ph.D. from The New School for Social Research.

His notable works include Reconstructing Chinatown (1998), The Urban Sociology Reader (2013), The Power of Urban Ethnic Places (2011), and Taking Back the Boulevard (2019). His research explores urban ethnic enclaves, gentrification dynamics, and immigrant-driven urban change.
Jan Lin has led grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (1999-2003) and collaborated on National Science Foundation projects comparing Korean American and Chinese American urban communities. He maintains an active online presence with writings on Northeast Los Angeles gentrification at KCET.org.
