Jan Leuchtenberger is a Professor in Asian Studies at the University of Puget Sound. Her research focuses on early modern Japanese discourses about Japan-West interactions and the historical representations of Christian missionaries in Japan.

Her work examines narratives from the Edo period (1603–1868) that portray Christian missionaries as villains, analyzing these texts in the context of global cultural discourses and Japan's self-perception. She also explores Japanese literature in translation, including themes of death, desire, and marginalization.
At the University of Puget Sound, she teaches Japanese language courses at all levels and literature courses such as Death and Desire in Premodern Japanese Literature and Writing the Margins in Contemporary Japanese Literature.
