Jan Langbein

Dr. Jan Langbein is a Research Fellow at the Leibniz Institute for Farm Animal Biology (FBN) where he leads the Animal Behaviour & Welfare working group. With a PhD from Humboldt University of Berlin, his research focuses on cognitive ethology and welfare assessment in farm animals.

Research Focus:

• Animal learning mechanisms under automated husbandry systems
• Visual discrimination and concept learning in dwarf goats
• Heart rate variability as stress indicator
• Cognitive enrichment strategies

Teaching: Lectures on ethology and animal behavior at University of Rostock.

Publications: Recent work explores cognitive abilities in goats (visual perception, social learning) and automated tracking validation methods. Research demonstrates goats' ability to interpret 2D images and shows personality impacts learning efficiency.
