Prof. Jan Komdeur is a Professor in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Groningen, leading the Komdeur group within the Groningen Institute for Evolutionary Life Sciences (GELIFES). His research focuses on the evolution of social behavior and life history patterns in animals, particularly cooperative breeding systems in birds like the Seychelles warbler. He integrates long-term field studies with experimental and theoretical approaches to understand how ecological and social factors shape behavior and fitness.
Key research areas include the evolution of group living, sex allocation strategies, and the impact of environmental changes on social systems. His work has established the Seychelles warbler as a key model system in evolutionary ecology. Komdeur has supervised over 40 BSc, 170 MSc, and 43 PhD students, contributing extensively to education through courses in Genetics, Ecology & Evolution, and Behavioral Ecology.
He holds editorial roles for Behavioural Ecology and has received awards including the Excellence in Research Award (2004) and the Bio Art & Design Award (2014). His research group actively collaborates internationally on projects involving cheetah conservation, climate impacts on avian development, and the genetic basis of senescence.
Lab activities include studies on burying beetles, blue tits, and thorn-tailed rayaditos, with a focus on behavioral plasticity, physiological adaptations, and eco-evolutionary dynamics. Current grants explore social determinants of evolvability and the genetic mechanisms underlying aging.
