Jan Karlsson is a Professor at the Department of Ecology, Environment and Geoscience at Umeå University, Sweden. His research focuses on the impacts of climate change on biogeochemistry and ecology of boreal and arctic aquatic ecosystems, particularly examining greenhouse gas exchange, carbon burial, and food web dynamics in lakes and rivers.
Research highlights include:
- Distinguishing direct (temperature) and indirect (catchment-driven) climate impacts
- Quantifying CO2 and CH4 fluxes in permafrost regions
- Analyzing primary production controls in nutrient-limited northern lakes
- Investigating regime shifts in climate-sensitive aquatic ecosystems
Recent publications reveal intensified riverine CO2 emissions under climate change, ice-melt-driven carbon evasion, and the role of groundwater in Arctic methane dynamics. His work integrates abiotic and biotic factors across hydrological continua in Siberian and boreal regions.
Professor Karlsson leads major projects like ARIMETH (Arctic River Methane Emissions) and contributes to understanding inland waters' role in global carbon cycling through extensive field studies and experimental approaches.
