Associate Professor Jan Gray is an Honorary Associate Professor in the School of Education at Edith Cowan University (ECU). She holds a PhD and has extensive experience in education leadership, research, and policy at national and international levels. Her roles have included Program Director for Research and Higher Degrees and Associate Dean of Research in ECU’s former Faculty of Education. As an experienced supervisor, she has guided over 20 successful doctoral completions.
Her research focuses on school leadership, educational policy, and school improvement, with a particular emphasis on equity in Indigenous education and international contexts such as Nigeria and Tanzania. She has held leadership roles in professional associations, including Executive Editor of the Q1 journal Teaching and Teacher Education (2017–2022).
Gray’s scholarship spans teacher education, governance, and policy implementation. Recent publications address challenges in pre-service teacher preparedness in Tanzania, policy failures in Nigeria, and the impact of boarding schools on Indigenous students in Australia. Her work often intersects with systemic barriers and inclusive educational practices.
She has secured significant grants, including projects on student retention (e.g., the Year 11 Quality Retention Project) and evaluations of initiatives like the Fogarty EDvance Program. Her contributions to policy mapping and educational engagement have influenced both local and global educational practices.
Gray has advised on numerous research projects and co-authored works on topics like Aboriginal student attendance and curriculum reform. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges educational theory, policy, and practical implementation to advance equitable and socially just education systems.
