Jan Geralt Bij de Vaate (dr. ir.) is a researcher at the Netherlands Institute for Space Research, an institute of the University of Groningen. His work centres on advanced instrumentation for space-based X-ray astronomy.
Research Focus: His expertise spans experimental astronomy, system requirement engineering, and high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy, with particular emphasis on cryogenic detector systems and the development of the Athena X-ray Integral Field Unit. He contributes directly to the European Space Agency’s Athena mission, aiming to deliver unprecedented spectral resolution for studies of the hot and energetic universe.
Recent Publication: In 2023 he co-authored the comprehensive design paper for the Athena X-ray Integral Field Unit, which consolidates the system requirements and preliminary design for the mission’s key cryogenic instrument.
