Jan Fietzke

Jan Fietzke is a Researcher at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, affiliated with the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel. He serves as the head of the LA-ICP-MS lab at GEOMAR and is the Joint-Editor-in-Chief of "Geostandards and Geoanalytical Research" since 2025. His research focuses on marine biogeochemistry, isotope geochemistry, and instrumental analytics.

Dr. Fietzke earned his Physics diploma from TU Dresden and Uni Heidelberg (1991-1997), followed by a PhD in Physics from Uni Heidelberg while also studying at CAU Kiel (1997-2000). After a postdoc position at CAU Kiel and IfM-GEOMAR Kiel (2000-2005), he became a staff scientist at GEOMAR in 2005 and has served as lab manager for MC-ICP-MS (AXIOM lab) since then. Since 2010, he has been head of the LA-ICP-MS lab at GEOMAR.

His research interests span marine biogeochemistry, isotope geochemistry, biomineralization, and instrumental analytics. Dr. Fietzke specializes in in-situ isotope and elemental analytics using laser ablation and ICP-MS techniques. His work focuses on chemical proxies in marine carbonates, particularly examining how marine organisms incorporate elements and isotopes into their skeletons as records of past ocean conditions. He investigates the impacts of ocean acidification on marine calcifiers and develops new methodologies for precise isotope ratio measurements.

Dr. Fietzke's extensive publication record demonstrates expertise in laser ablation MC-ICP-MS techniques, boron isotope analysis for pH reconstruction, and the study of marine carbonate systems. His work bridges analytical chemistry, marine biogeochemistry, and paleoceanography, with applications to understanding past and present ocean conditions. Recent publications focus on coral biomineralization, fish otolith geochemistry, foraminifera recrystallization, and instrumental improvements for isotope measurements.

Dr. Fietzke has led several significant research projects including LASSO (2006-2008), BIOACID I (2009-2012), BIOACID II (2012-2015), and EPIBleach (2022-2025). He has also collaborated on projects such as CALMARO (2008-2012), TRION (2010-2016), and BASE-LiNE Earth (2015-2018). His work has resulted in granted and pending patents related to analytical instrumentation.

At GEOMAR, Dr. Fietzke manages the AXIOM MC-ICP-MS lab and the LA-ICP-MS lab, where his team develops and applies cutting-edge analytical techniques for marine geochemical research. His laboratory work supports numerous national and international collaborations focused on understanding marine biogeochemical cycles and past ocean conditions.
