Jan E. Snellman is a Visiting Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Aalto University, actively collaborating with Professor Maarit Korpi-Lagg's research group and Kimmo Kaski's team. His current position as a faculty visitor involves interdisciplinary computational research at the intersection of social science, epidemiology, and complex systems.
Snellman's research spans two distinct eras: recent work (2017-2024) focuses on computational social science with applications in epidemic modeling and socio-economic dynamics, while earlier research (2009-2015) centered on astrophysical hydrodynamics and turbulence. His current interests integrate network science, game theory, and agent-based modeling to analyze pandemic-socioeconomic feedback loops, regional vulnerability, and social structure formation.
Analysis of his 2022-2024 publications reveals a concentrated effort on spatially explicit epidemic modeling, particularly examining how regional socio-economic disparities influence disease spread and vice versa. This work employs hybrid methodological approaches combining computational social science with public health analytics, often featuring country-specific case studies like Spain. His research demonstrates increasing sophistication in modeling bidirectional relationships between pandemics and socio-economic systems.
Snellman maintains active research collaborations within Aalto University's computational science ecosystem, contributing to projects that bridge computer science methodologies with real-world social and public health challenges through the Korpi-Lagg and Kaski research groups.
