Jan Dariusz Cutajar is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Early Stage Researcher and PhD Research Fellow at the University of Oslo's Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History (IAKH), hosted within the EU's CHANGE-ITN network. His research focuses on imaging-based documentation and novel dry-cleaning methods for Edvard Munch's unvarnished oil paintings at the UiO Aula. He holds a PhD Research Fellowship since 2019, alongside a MSc (2016) and MA (2014) in Conservation from University College London, and a BSc in Chemistry (2012) from the University of Malta and Bishop's University.
His academic interests span sustainable conservation practices, public engagement in heritage, and conservation science (e.g., hyperspectral imaging). Professionally, he leads conservation projects in Sudan (El Kurru tombs) and ancient wood conservation in Egypt, founded JD Cutajar Conservation in Amsterdam (2018–2019), and has served as a research assistant, teaching assistant, and freelance conservator. He is affiliated with the National Trust and Institut Francais de l'Archeologie Orientale.
His publications emphasize technical analyses of cleaning methods, material degradation mechanisms, and interdisciplinary approaches to heritage preservation. Ongoing projects include the Munch Aula Paintings project and collaborations on wood conservation in archaeological contexts.
