Professor Jan Cilliers holds the Chair in Mineral Processing at the Department of Earth Science & Engineering, Imperial College London (2005–present). He also held a concurrent professorship at the University of Manchester (2005). His affiliations include the Advanced Mineral Processing Research Group, Centre for Infrastructure Robotics Ecosystems, and Space Lab. He specializes in froth flotation technology, mineral economics, and process design, with a focus on optimizing separation via froth structure analysis and particle motion tracking using techniques like PEPT.
- Education: MBA (Manchester Business School, 2001); PhD/MSc/BSc (University of the Witwatersrand, 1981–1986).
Research priorities include froth stability measures, flotation vessel design, and financial hedging strategies for metal recovery. He leads the International Mineral Processing Council’s Education Commission and authored the IMPC Minerals Industry Education and Training Book. His funding includes a £6M Rio Tinto partnership (2005–2010).
- Awards: Royal Academy of Engineering Fellowship (2010), multiple plenary/keynote engagements, and fellowship statuses in IChemE and IMMM.
Grants include leadership of the Rio Tinto Centre for Advanced Mineral Recovery. He advises on mineral processing and extractive metallurgy, with involvement in interdisciplinary initiatives like the Centre for Translational Nutrition and Food Research.
