Jan Ciborowski is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Calgary and holds the NSERC/COSIA Industrial Research Chair in Oil Sands Wetland Reclamation. His research integrates aquatic ecology, ecotoxicology, and bioindicator development, with fieldwork in the Great Lakes and Alberta oil sands regions.
He studies wetland recovery post-mining, carbon dynamics, and contaminant transfer in food webs. Recent work quantifies ecological succession in constructed wetlands and develops standardized assessment tools for coastal ecosystems.
He mentors students in field/lab techniques and leads collaborative projects like the Great Lakes Wetlands Initiative. Current research examines ion balances, food web structure, and vegetation dynamics in reclaimed landscapes.
