Jan A.M. Smeitink is a Dutch physician-scientist and full Professor of Mitochondrial Medicine at Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre. He serves as Director of the Nijmegen Centre for Mitochondrial Disorders (NCMD) and the Institute for Genetic and Metabolic Disease (IGMD), while also chairing the Centre for Systems Biology and Bioenergetics. Additionally, he holds an adjunct professorship at Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, and is the CEO/CSO of biopharmaceutical company Khondrion BV.
- Full Professor of Mitochondrial Medicine (Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre)
- Director, Nijmegen Centre for Mitochondrial Disorders (1996–present)
- Director, Institute for Genetic and Metabolic Disease (2008–present)
- CEO/CSO, Khondrion BV (2010–present)
Research Interests: Smeitink's work focuses on mitochondrial dysfunction in human disease, particularly oxidative phosphorylation deficiencies, pediatric mitochondrial disorders, and metabolic syndromes. His scholarship bridges inborn errors of metabolism, neurogenetics, and systems biology, with groundbreaking studies on mutations in mitochondrial genes (e.g., NDUFV1, IDH2) and their clinical manifestations in leukodystrophy, epilepsy, and metabolic encephalopathies.
Publications & Trends: His research portfolio spans over 300 articles, emphasizing monogenic mitochondrial diseases, metabolic cancer links, and enzymatic pathway disruptions. Key subfields include oxidative phosphorylation, tRNA synthetase deficiencies, IDH mutational effects, and pharmacological implications of mitochondrial toxicity.
Scientific Awards:
- Prinses Beatrix Foundation Jubilee Research Award (2006)
- Honorary Member, Pediatric Neurology Association, Hong Kong (2011)
- 3M Foundation Award (2009)
- ZonMW PM Rare Grant (2012)
- Marie Curie ITN grant MEET (2012)
Advising & Grants: He has mentored three former students who became full professors internationally. He coordinated the EU-funded EUMITOCOMBAT program (2004–2008) and secured major grants from NWO, ZonMW, and the European Commission.
Labs & Teams: Smeitink founded the NCMD in 1996, a leading global hub for mitochondrial research, and established Khondrion BV in 2010 to translate discoveries into therapies, now employing 15 staff.
