Jan A. Witkowski

Jan A. Witkowski is a Professor at the School of Biological Sciences at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) and serves as Special Advisor to the President. He holds a BSc in Zoology from the University of Southampton and a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of London. Witkowski’s career spans molecular genetics, the history of science, and science policy. He directed the Banbury Center at CSHL for 30 years, organizing over 600 conferences on topics ranging from genetics to societal impacts of biology. His research has focused on Duchenne muscular dystrophy, oncogenes, and DNA diagnostics. He is a prolific author, co-authoring textbooks like Recombinant DNA and editing The Annotated and Illustrated Double Helix. He was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science for his contributions to science communication and ethics.
