Jan A. Smalle is an Associate Professor in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences at the University of Kentucky's Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. He directs research on plant cellular regulation mechanisms and nanomaterial interactions with biological systems.
His laboratory investigates the ubiquitin/26S proteasome pathway in Arabidopsis thaliana, examining its crucial functions in developmental processes and stress responses. Current projects explore protein degradation regulation, cytokinin signaling networks, and plant-nanoparticle interactions with applications in agricultural biotechnology.
Dr. Smalle teaches undergraduate and graduate courses including PLS 210: The Life Processes of Plants and PLS 623: Physiology of Plants II. His publication record demonstrates consistent research in plant hormone regulation and innovative applications of nanotechnology in plant science.
Before joining the University of Kentucky in 2004, he conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1998-2004) and held positions at Harvard University and Ghent University. He earned his Ph.D. in Plant Genetics from Ghent University in 1998 under Dr. Dominique Van Der Straeten.
