Jamila E. Jefferson is the Earl B. Shurtz Research Professor of Law and inaugural Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging at the University of Kansas School of Law. She previously served as a professor at Wayne State University School of Law and University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law, and held visiting roles at multiple institutions. Her legal career includes over a decade of private practice in Washington D.C. and New Orleans, followed by a judicial clerkship for Judge Carl E. Stewart of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.

Research Interests: Professor Jefferson focuses on property law’s role in perpetuating racial inequities, particularly how marginalized communities are excluded from public spaces through legal mechanisms. Her work critiques systemic racism embedded in zoning laws, nuisance doctrines, and policing practices. She examines how property regimes enforce racial hierarchies and proposes reforms to address structural injustices. Recent work explores the intersection of technology (e.g., AI in smart cities) with traditional property governance frameworks.
