Dr Jamie Arathoon is a Lecturer in Geography at the School of Humanities, York St John University. He holds a PhD from the University of Glasgow (2022), an MRes in Human Geographies from Glasgow, and a BA (Hons) in Geography from Keele University. His research focuses on animal geographies, disability geographies, and ethnomethodology, with a particular emphasis on assistance animals and pet theft. He has secured significant funding, including an ESRC Postdoctoral Fellowship, and contributes to campaigns like the Pet Theft Reform Campaign.
Education: PhD (University of Glasgow, 2022), MRes (University of Glasgow), BA (Keele University).
Research Interests:
- Assistance animals and their roles in disabled individuals' lives
- Geographies of pet theft and community responses
- Ethnomethodological approaches to human-animal interaction
Professional Activities: Co-founder and treasurer of the RGS Animal Geographies Working Group, member of the Scottish Ethnomethodology Discourse Interaction and Talk (SEDIT) Group, and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
Grants/Awards: £110,000 ESRC Postdoctoral Fellowship, RGS Fellowship.
Lab/Teams: Involved in interdisciplinary collaborations on pet theft and disability-animal entanglements.
