Jamie Angell serves as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Theater and Performance Studies at Occidental College, appointed in 1992. He teaches core courses including Performance in Action, Children’s Theater, Comedy and Social Change, and Audition Workshop while directing department productions.
His educational background includes:
- B.A. from Dartmouth College
- M.F.A. from the California Institute of the Arts
Professor Angell specializes in physical theater practices with research emphasizing community-engaged performance. His work bridges children's theater, comedy as social commentary, and site-specific productions – including aquatic performances in campus pools. He pioneered a high-impact Community Based Learning model connecting Oxy students with Northeast Los Angeles elementary schools for arts education.
His recognition includes:
- 2004 Community Building Award from the Urban and Environmental Policy Institute of Los Angeles
Through the Occidental Children’s Theater program, he mentors students in community outreach while developing youth performance initiatives. His industry partnerships with major animation studios provide professional pathways beyond academia.
As founding Artistic Director of the 28-year-running Occidental Children’s Theater, he oversees summer campus performances, community tours, and youth programs including the Summer Institute of Fun (ages 6-15) and Youth Acting Program (improvisation for 6-12 year olds).
