معرفی
Dr James Wright is a Senior Lecturer in Sport Science and Performance at Solent University, where he joined the academic team in 2018 after initially working as a technician instructor since 2014. He serves as the Department of Sport and Health Research Lead, H&S Committee Coordinator, and PGR Coordinator, with primary teaching responsibilities in sport and exercise physiology at multiple academic levels.
- BSc (Hons) Sports Science, University of Portsmouth (2004)
- MSc Sports Performance, University of Portsmouth (2008)
- PGCL&T in HE, University of Winchester (2013)
- PhD in Calculating Critical Power and the Finite Work Capacity from a Single All-out Cycling Test, Solent University (2019)
Dr Wright's research focuses on the reliability and validity of sports science testing equipment, football-specific testing and training methodologies, the physiological effects of holding items when running, cycling performance, and training science. His work has significant applications in professional sports, particularly with football clubs and national athletic programs. His research consistently addresses practical challenges in sports performance measurement and optimization.
His publications demonstrate a strong focus on sports performance metrics, with recent work examining interval training adaptations in cyclists, physical outputs in football matches, and validation of non-invasive performance monitoring technologies. His research often bridges laboratory testing with real-world athletic applications.
- Routledge Recently Qualified Researcher Free Communication Award - BASES Annual Conference (2018)
Dr Wright actively supervises PhD students on topics including muscle hypertrophy, running biomechanics, football match demands, and futsal goalscoring dynamics. He has secured research funding including the 2025 project 'The physiological demands of holding a small object when running' (£4,535) and the 2018 project 'The influence of locomotive goal-directed behaviour on patterns of brain activity in older adults' (£4,991). He serves as an external examiner for UK universities and participates in course validation panels.
As an accredited CASES sport and exercise scientist, Dr Wright directs the CASES laboratory and leads CASES workshops including the Supervised Experience Entry workshop and Combined Supervisor/Reviewer workshop. He has provided sports science support to professional football clubs, GB athletics, and GB cyclists and triathletes, maintaining strong industry connections that inform his academic work.
