James Wood is an Associate Professor in the School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia (UEA), where he has been a faculty member since 2014. His research and teaching focus on eighteenth-century and Romantic literature, with a strong emphasis on the intersections between literary forms and sociability, intellectual history, and theories of labour.

His research explores how literary forms represent and mediate social life, particularly through anecdotes and essayistic writing. He is deeply interested in moral philosophy, travel literature, genre theory, and ecocriticism. His current work investigates the conceptualization of intellectual labour as manual labour in the eighteenth century.
The analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent focus on Enlightenment and Romantic-era literature, philosophical narratives, archival editing, and global Shakespeare adaptations. His work spans monographs, edited volumes, journal articles, and encyclopedic entries, demonstrating both scholarly depth and interdisciplinary reach.

Dr Wood advises PhD students on topics related to the 'long' eighteenth century and has held prestigious fellowships, including an Irish Research Council postdoctoral fellowship at Trinity College, Dublin. He is actively engaged in research output and academic service, contributing to major reference works and critical editions. He is a member of the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century Research Group at UEA.
His editorial projects include co-editing the literary papers of Reverend Jermyn Pratt for the Norfolk Record Society, reflecting his commitment to archival scholarship and regional intellectual history.
