James Wheeley is a Senior Lecturer in Sedimentary Geology and School Deputy Head of Education at the University of Birmingham's School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences. He specializes in carbonate sedimentology and micropalaeontology, particularly applying conodont isotope studies to address Palaeozoic palaeoclimatic and palaeoecological questions. His career includes roles as a Teaching Fellow (2007–2012), Lecturer (2012–2016), and Senior Lecturer (since 2016). He holds a PhD from Cardiff University (2007), MSc from the University of Bristol (2002), and BSc from Durham University (2000). Wheeley teaches sedimentary geology at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervises student mapping projects, and contributes to fieldwork programs in Scotland and SE Spain. His research focuses on conodont oxygen isotopes to reconstruct ancient seawater temperatures and palaeoclimates. Recent publications (2025) include studies on Canadian Cordillera tectonics and Wessex Formation palaeoenvironments. He serves on academic panels, including The Royal Society's Research Grants Scheme (2013–2018), and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Research interests span carbonate sedimentology, applied micropalaeontology, and deep-time climatic reconstruction. His work integrates isotopic analyses with stratigraphic and sedimentological methods. Notable contributions include studies on Silurian and Ordovician strata, uranium isotope records of ocean anoxia, and conodont-based palaeoenvironmental proxies. Wheeley collaborates widely, with co-authors across institutions globally. His administrative roles include Deputy Head of Education and panel memberships emphasizing education and research governance.
