James Vickery serves as an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Real Estate Department at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and concurrently as a Senior Economic Advisor and Economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. Previously, he worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and has held teaching positions at New York University and Princeton University.
He earned his PhD in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before joining the Federal Reserve in 2004. Prior to graduate studies, he worked as a research analyst at the Reserve Bank of Australia.
Vickery's research centers on financial intermediation, real estate finance, and household finance with specialized expertise in mortgage and MBS markets. His work examines bank securities portfolios, mortgage credit supply dynamics, regulatory impacts on lending, and technological transformations in mortgage markets. This interdisciplinary approach bridges theoretical finance with real-world policy applications.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals consistent focus on financial stability themes, particularly how banking regulation, mortgage markets, and stress testing interact during economic crises. His empirical work leverages Federal Reserve data to address policy-relevant questions about credit supply resilience and market fragmentation.
Vickery has significantly contributed to Federal Reserve policy through roles including Deputy Chair of the Model Oversight Group for supervisory stress tests. He also serves as associate editor for leading finance journals including the Journal of Financial Economics and Journal of Money, Credit and Banking.
At the Philadelphia Fed, Vickery operates within the Research Department collaborating on monetary policy analysis and financial stability research. His dual academic-policy role enables direct translation of scholarly insights into regulatory frameworks, particularly regarding mortgage markets and banking supervision.
