James Summers

Dr James Summers serves as Senior Lecturer at Lancaster University's School of Law and Director of the Centre for International Law and Human Rights. He teaches undergraduate course LAW 257X International Law and postgraduate courses LLM 220 Rights of Peoples, Minorities and Indigenous Peoples and LLM 221/d The Law of International Organisations and Institutions.

His research focuses on international law construction with specialized expertise in peoples' rights, self-determination, statehood, nationalism, use of force, laws of war, international organizations, and environmental law. This interdisciplinary approach bridges legal theory with contemporary geopolitical challenges.

Publication analysis reveals consistent scholarly contribution since 2004, with recent work emphasizing territorial integrity (2022), non-state actors (2018), and self-determination frameworks (2015).
