James Scorer is a Professor of Latin American Studies in the Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies at the University of Manchester. He serves as Associate Director of CIDRAL (Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Arts and Languages) and previously co-directed the Centre for Latin American & Caribbean Studies (2014-2019).
His research explores the interplay between culture and political communities in Latin America, focusing on:
- Urban imaginaries (particularly Buenos Aires, 1960s-2000s)
- Post-2005 Latin American comics, especially depictions of racialized identities
- Photography and visual culture, including iconic representations of Ernesto Che Guevara
Recent projects include the AHRC-funded Comics and Race in Latin America (2021-2024, co-investigator Peter Wade) and the Leverhulme-funded Comics and the Latin American City (2016-2019). His publications span monographs like Latin American Comics in the Twenty-First Century: Transgressing the Frame (2024) and edited collections in English and Spanish.
Key contributions to interdisciplinary research include:
- Developing the CORALA dataset (2023) with Peter Wade
- Advancing cultural memory studies through work on Latin American comics and photography
- Interrogating visual narratives of nationhood and racial politics
