James Raymer is Professor of Demography in the Australian Demographic and Social Research Institute (ADSRI) at the Australian National University. His research focuses on migration estimation and dynamic population modelling. Previously, from 2004 to 2012, he was a Lecturer and then Reader in the Division of Social Statistics, School of Social Statistics at the University of Southampton.
Dr. Raymer received his PhD in Geography from the University of Colorado, Boulder, in 2003. His academic journey spans institutions in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia, reflecting his international expertise in demographic research.
Professor Raymer's research interests center on demographic methods, particularly in the areas of migration estimation and dynamic population modeling. His work addresses critical questions about how populations change over time and space, with a particular focus on international migration patterns, age and sex structures of migrant populations, and the integration of uncertainty in demographic projections. His research has significant implications for policy planning and understanding population dynamics in an increasingly mobile world.
Analysis of Professor Raymer's publications reveals a consistent focus on migration and population modeling. His work spans methodological innovations in demographic techniques, applications to specific regions (particularly Australia and Europe), and interdisciplinary approaches that integrate statistical methods with demographic theory. A notable trend is his increasing focus on incorporating uncertainty into demographic estimates and projections, reflecting a sophisticated understanding of the limitations and possibilities of demographic data.
Professor Raymer has collaborated extensively with researchers across the globe, including institutions in the United States, Europe, and Australia. His work often appears in leading demographic journals and has contributed significantly to methodological advances in the field.
