James O’Callaghan is a Professor of Architectural Glass at Delft University of Technology’s Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment. He leads the Glass & Transparency Research Group, focusing on pushing boundaries in materiality, performance, and aesthetics of architectural glass. His research explores innovations like cast glass bricks, ultra-thin glass, and laminated glass structures.
Prof. O’Callaghan has over 20 years of professional experience as a structural and façade engineer, co-founding Eckersley O’Callaghan. He has designed iconic glass elements for Apple Stores worldwide. Previously, he was a Visiting Professor at TU Delft (2015–2016) and taught at the University of Portsmouth.
- Awards: Includes the Milne Medal (2016), Phoenix Award (2017), Royal Academy of Engineering Fellowship (2018), and IStructE Gold Medal (2019).
- Professional Roles: Member of the UK Design Council Board, HS2 Design Panel, and South East Design Panel.
His research emphasizes rigor, curiosity, and collaboration with students to innovate in material behavior and architectural applications.
