James O. Berry is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University at Buffalo (College of Arts and Sciences). His research focuses on molecular and developmental biology, particularly the regulation of photosynthetic gene expression in C4 plants. Notably, he investigates Rubisco enzyme regulation and the role of RNA-binding proteins like RLSB in C3-to-C4 plant evolution. Berry teaches courses in genetics and developmental biology, emphasizing advanced laboratory techniques such as CRISPR editing and confocal microscopy.
His work integrates molecular biology, biochemistry, and transgenic plant systems to uncover mechanisms underlying C4 photosynthesis, with implications for improving crop productivity. Collaborations include studies on antibiotic soil remediation (with Diana Aga), plant-virus interactions (John Carr), and nitrate transporter genes (LiPing Yin). He received the 2019 Teaching Innovation Award for his contributions to pedagogical excellence.
- Research Highlights: RLSB protein regulation of Rubisco, C4 photosynthesis evolution, agricultural antibiotic effects.
- Teaching: BIO 329 (Genetics Lab), BIO 367/370 (Developmental Biology courses).
