James O'Neil Spady is an Associate Professor of American History and Director of the Humanities Concentration at Soka University of America. He holds a PhD from the College of William and Mary, with MA and BA degrees from the same institution and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. His research focuses on race, indigeneity, and colonization in American history, emphasizing community movements and settler colonial dynamics. Recent publications include Take Freedom (2025), Fugitive Movements (2022), and Education and the Racial Dynamics of Settler Colonialism (2020). His work analyzes topics such as the Denmark Vesey slave uprising, indigenous resistance, and the intersection of education and racialization in colonial societies.
