Professor James Norman is a Professor of Cell Sciences at the CRUK Scotland Institute, University of Glasgow, and is based at the Beatson Institute in Glasgow. His research focuses on cellular mechanisms underlying cancer progression, particularly in the areas of integrin trafficking, cell migration, and metastasis.
Professor Norman's research interests center on understanding how Rab GTPases control integrin trafficking in cancer cells. His work aims to describe the molecular machinery that coordinates integrin traffic during cell migration, which may represent novel targets for anti-metastatic drugs. A major focus of his research is characterizing the mechanisms by which integrin-associated proteins command mRNA transport and translation during the invasive migration of cancer cells. His laboratory investigates how integrin trafficking may guide mRNA to ribosomes associated with protrusive regions of metastatic cells, thereby localizing the synthesis of pro-migratory proteins.
Analysis of Professor Norman's recent publications (2020-2024) reveals a strong focus on cancer cell invasion mechanisms, particularly in glioblastoma and ovarian cancer. His work frequently examines the role of GTPases (Rab, RAL, ARF), integrin trafficking, and extracellular vesicles in promoting cancer metastasis. There is also significant emphasis on identifying potential therapeutic targets, such as through BH3-mimetics for glioblastoma treatment and ATR inhibition for opposing glioblastoma invasion.
Professor Norman has secured multiple significant research grants, including funding from the Medical Research Council (2024-2029) for research on mRNA-translation and membrane trafficking coordination, a Wellcome Trust grant (2022), Breast Cancer Now funding (2019-2022), and previous MRC funding (2017-2022). He has also received a Glasgow Cancer Centre Clinical Research Fellowship from the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research (2016-2018).
