James N. Gregory is a Professor of History at the University of Washington, specializing in 20th-century U.S. history with focuses on labor radicalism, regionalism (West/South), race/civil rights, and migration. He previously directed the Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies and currently serves as president-elect of the Pacific Coast Branch of the American Historical Association.
His research explores labor movements, social justice, and digital public history. Notable works include *American Exodus* (1989) and *The Southern Diaspora* (2005), award-winning studies of migration and labor history. Gregory leads the Civil Rights and Labor History Consortium, which produces projects like the Seattle Civil Rights & Labor History Project and the Racial Restrictive Covenants Project.
Recent work includes analyzing American social movements via digital mapping and co-editing *The Seattle General Strike Centennial Edition*. He received the 2024 John Lewis Award for his research on racial covenants and advocacy for social justice.
Gregory holds a Ph.D. (1983) and B.A. (1975) from the University of California, Berkeley and Santa Barbara, respectively.
