James Morsink

James Morsink serves as a Lecturer in the MS in Applied Economics program at Johns Hopkins University, based at the Washington, D.C. campus (Hopkins Bloomberg Center). With 32 years of experience at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), he brings deep expertise in global macroeconomic policy and crisis management.

He holds a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a BA from Princeton University, reflecting a strong foundation in economic theory and policy analysis.

His professional focus centers on macroeconomic stability, financial sector vulnerabilities, and economic transitions, with extensive field experience across Central Europe, East Asia, the Eurozone, and Latin America. This includes navigating currency crises, banking collapses, and sovereign debt challenges in diverse institutional contexts.

At the IMF, Morsink held progressively senior roles including management positions in the Monetary and Capital Markets Department (2012-2021) and Western Hemisphere Department (2021-2024), where he oversaw country programs for Brazil, Ecuador, Panama, Nicaragua, and Caribbean nations. He retired from the IMF in 2024 after negotiating critical arrangements during the global financial crisis, including Hungary's Stand-By Arrangement and Poland's Flexible Credit Line.
