Professor McLaughlin's research focuses on nanotechnology applications in digital healthcare, particularly in point-of-care sensors and cardiology diagnostics. His work integrates sensors, microfluidics, electronics, and photonics to develop innovative medical diagnostic tools. He has pioneered developments in sensor materials technology with significant impact on cardiac monitoring and predictive healthcare systems.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on advanced biosensor development using nanomaterials like MXenes, ZnO tetrapods, and paper-based platforms for detecting cancer biomarkers, HPV, and renal function indicators. These works reflect his commitment to creating practical, point-of-care diagnostic solutions that bridge engineering and clinical medicine.
- CBE (2022) for Research and Education
- OBE (2012) for Research and Economic Development
- Qualcomm Xprize Tricorder Team (2017)
- Healthcare NI Innovation Award (2017)
- Life Savers Recognition (2021)
- Fellow of Irish Academy of Engineering
- Fellow of Institute of Physics
Professor McLaughlin has supervised over 40 PhD students while securing more than £100 million in research funding. He has established multiple research centers including ECME, Biodevices Lab, CHIC, NIBEC, NICAM, NanotecNI, and BEST, which have evolved into the vibrant Engineering Research Institute with over eighty researchers. His current leadership includes the £43M Belfast City Deal Centre for Digital Healthcare Technology and EPSRC-funded Digital Health initiatives.
He co-founded Intelesens Ltd. (now part of Ultralinq) and has served as Director for SiSAF and the European Connected Health Campus/Alliance. His leadership extends to numerous advisory boards including the EPSRC Peer Review College, NanoIreland Task Force, and US-Ireland R&D Partnership.
