James McDougall is an Associate Professor of Modern History at the University of Oxford, affiliated with Trinity College. He specializes in:

- Modern/contemporary Middle East and North Africa
- Global Islam since 1700
- Historiography and critical theory
- Colonial and postcolonial studies
His research explores:
- Colonialism's aftereffects in France and Africa
