James Martin is a Professor in the Department of Politics and International Relations at Goldsmiths, University of London. He holds a PhD in Political Theory from the University of Bristol (1994), an MA in Political Thought from the University of Kent (1989), and a BA (Hons) in Politics and Sociology from the University of East Anglia (1988).
His research focuses on modern political culture and conflict, particularly through political ideas and rhetoric. He has extensively studied Italian political thought (e.g., Gramsci, Gobetti), public speech as a medium of political action, and the analysis of affects in political rhetoric (via psychoanalysis). He previously convened the Rhetoric, Discourse and Politics Specialist Group of the UK Political Studies Association (2010-2020).

- 2019: Published Psychopolitics of Speech, analyzing rhetorical excess and desire.
- 2014: Authored Politics and Rhetoric: A Critical Introduction.
He has received the Leverhulme Research Fellowship (2013-2015). His recent work examines the legacy of Italian Communist Party leader Palmiro Togliatti.
