James Madden serves as Professor of Philosophy at Benedictine College, where he has taught since 2003. His scholarly work bridges classical philosophical traditions with contemporary technological and scientific challenges, establishing him as a significant voice in modern philosophical discourse.
Dr. Madden earned his academic credentials through a diverse educational journey, completing his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Purdue University, an M.A. in Philosophy from Kent State University, an M.A. in Psychoanalysis from the Global Center for Advanced Studies, and his undergraduate studies in Philosophy at St. Norbert College. This multidisciplinary foundation informs his unique approach to philosophical inquiry.
His research primarily focuses on the philosophy of mind, philosophy of technology, philosophy of religion, psychoanalysis, and metaphysics. Dr. Madden's distinctive contribution lies in applying Thomistic philosophy to contemporary issues in cognitive science and technology. His work examines how hylomorphism (the Aristotelian-Thomistic theory of substance) offers alternatives to both materialist and dualist positions in the philosophy of mind. He also investigates the relationship between technological mediation and human consciousness, particularly how increasing technological saturation affects our sense of meaning and dignity.
Analysis of Dr. Madden's publication history reveals a consistent trajectory of interdisciplinary scholarship connecting traditional philosophical frameworks with modern scientific and technological challenges. His work spans metaphysics, philosophy of mind, philosophy of religion, and the philosophy of science, with particular emphasis on Thomistic and Aristotelian approaches. A significant thread throughout his publications is the exploration of how traditional philosophical concepts can address contemporary issues in neuroscience and cognitive science. His more recent work increasingly focuses on the philosophical implications of technology, particularly examining techno-nihilism and its impact on human meaning and consciousness.
Dr. Madden has delivered numerous invited lectures at prestigious institutions including Harvard School of Medicine, Princeton University, Vanderbilt University, MIT, and Brown University. His presentations frequently address the compatibility of neuroscience with traditional concepts of the soul, the philosophical implications of technological development, and the relationship between science and religion. Notable presentations include 'The Metaphysics of Soul' and 'Aristotle on the Good' at Harvard's Soul & Brain Conference in 2019.
At Benedictine College, Dr. Madden teaches general education courses in philosophy including Logic, Principles of Nature, Ethics, and Philosophical Psychology, alongside specialized courses in modern philosophy, metaphysics, and philosophy of religion. His teaching reflects his interdisciplinary approach, connecting historical philosophical questions with contemporary scientific and technological challenges. He has authored multiple books including 'Mind, Matter, and Nature' (2013), 'Thinking about Thinking' (2023), and 'Unidentified Flying Hyperobject' (2023), with his forthcoming work 'Subjectivity and Its Discontent(s)' currently under review.
Beyond his academic pursuits, Dr. Madden is an accomplished Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitor, winning the IBJJF No-Gi World Championship (Masters 4, blue belt, open weight class) in December 2019. He has also authored 'Ageless Athlete,' a book about physical fitness and strength/conditioning, demonstrating his practical interest in the mind-body connection and human flourishing.
