James M. Lattimer is a Distinguished Professor of Astronomy in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He teaches multiple astronomy courses including AST 100: Astronomy Today, AST 200: Research in Astronomy, AST 248: The Search for Life in the Universe, AST 301: Cosmic Catastrophes, AST 346: Galaxies, CEN 511: Recent Discoveries in Astronomy, PHY 521: Stars, and PHY 669: Nuclear Astrophysics Seminar.
Dr. Lattimer received his B.S. in Physics from the University of Notre Dame and his Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Lattimer's research focuses on nuclear astrophysics, particularly the physics of neutron stars, supernovae, and the equation of state of dense matter. His work on binary neutron star mergers as part of the NASA High Performance Computing Grand Challenge has significant implications for understanding gravitational waves and the structure of matter at extreme densities. He has developed widely-used potential and relativistic field-theoretical liquid droplet equations of state. His research connects theoretical nuclear physics with astronomical observations, bridging these disciplines to address fundamental questions about the universe.
Dr. Lattimer maintains an active research program with collaborators including Madappa Prakash, Gerry Brown, Ralph Wijers, F. Doug Swesty, Christian Cardall, and Jose Pons at Stony Brook. He has created educational resources including supernova and neutron star merger movies to illustrate complex astrophysical phenomena. His teaching spans introductory astronomy courses to advanced graduate seminars, demonstrating his commitment to astronomy education at all levels. Dr. Lattimer is known for his strong social and political engagement, particularly regarding women's rights, public health policies, and freedom of expression, as evidenced by his public statements discouraging students from considering universities in states with restrictive laws.
