James M. Doering is the Shelton H. Short, III Professor in the Liberal Arts and Professor of Music at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia. He holds a Ph.D. in Musicology from Washington University in St. Louis (1998), an MM in Piano Performance from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (1992), and a BM in Piano Performance from The College of Wooster (1990).
- Research Interests: Film music, American orchestra, silent film accompaniment, music management, and music and government.
- Teaching: Courses in music history, theory, film music, and arts management, including Music in American Film and Capstone in Music.
- Publications: Articles in American Music, The Musical Quarterly, and Journal of the Society for American Music, focusing on silent film scores, Bach, and American music history.
- Pedagogical Contributions: Recipient of the United Methodist Church Award for Excellence in Teaching (2007) and nominated for the SCHEV Outstanding Faculty Award (2022).
His scholarship spans silent film music, biographies of music managers, and interdisciplinary studies of music in governance. Notable works include the book The Great Orchestrator (University of Illinois Press, 2013), which won an AMS-75 Award and was an ARSC Finalist (2014). Doering has performed live scores for silent films, including Antony and Cleopatra (1914) at the National Gallery of Art (2008).
Leadership: Served as Chair of the Capital Chapter of the American Musicological Society (2017–2021) and Department Chair (2014–2023).
- Performances: As a pianist and organist, he has presented recitals and silent film accompaniments across Virginia and Maryland.
