James Langeland is the Upjohn Professor of Life Sciences and Professor of Biology at Kalamazoo College since 2009, following roles as Associate Professor (2003–2009) and Assistant Professor (1997–2003). He holds a BA from Kalamazoo College and a PhD from the University of Wisconsin. His research explores the genetic and developmental mechanisms underlying vertebrate evolution, focusing on chordate organisms like amphioxus, lampreys, and sharks. He investigates gene duplications and expression patterns linked to morphological innovations in early vertebrates.
Key grants include a $380,000 WM Keck Foundation grant for teaching-research integration, a $320,000 NSF grant (2001–2005), and a NIH grant (1998–2001). He teaches courses in evolution, genetics, molecular biology, and developmental biology. His lab has mentored numerous undergraduate researchers, evident in co-authored publications.
Langeland’s work bridges molecular genetics, embryology, and evolutionary biology, with studies on genes like Dlx, Emx, and Otx in lampreys and amphioxus. His research highlights how genetic changes drive anatomical diversity in vertebrate lineages. He also contributes to bioinformatics education through interdisciplinary curricula.
His lab’s studies on lamprey and amphioxus genomes provide insights into vertebrate ancestry and the origins of key traits like jaws and limbs. Collaborative projects span global institutions, emphasizing comparative genomics and developmental pathways.
