James L. McClelland is the Lucie Stern Professor in the Social Sciences and Professor of Psychology at Stanford University, with courtesy appointments in Linguistics and Computer Science. He founded the Center for Mind, Brain, Computation and Technology at Stanford in 2007 and previously served as Department Chair (2009-2012).
- Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from University of Pennsylvania (1975)
- Co-Director of the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition (Carnegie Mellon/University of Pittsburgh, 1984-2006)
His research focuses on cognitive functions through parallel distributed processing (PDP) models, including:
- Perception and perceptual decision-making
- Mathematical cognition and numerical reasoning
- Language processing and reading
- Neural basis of learning and memory
- Developmental transitions in cognitive abilities
Key article trends include computational modeling of cognitive processes, with a 2016 paper on PDP approaches to mathematical cognition. His work bridges experimental and theoretical studies in cognitive science.
Major awards include:
- Howard Crosby Warren Medal (1993)
- APA Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award (1996)
- Grawemeyer Prize (2001)
- IEEE Neural Networks Pioneer Award (2002)
- David E. Rumelhart Prize (2008)
- NAS Atkinson Prize (2014)
- Heineken Prize in Cognitive Science (2015)
He has taught PDP approaches at Stanford and collaborated with DeepMind as a consulting research scientist. His lab investigates neural mechanisms underlying cognitive development and learning.
