Dr James Juniper is an Honorary Lecturer in the School of Economics at the Newcastle Business School, University of Newcastle. He holds a PhD from the University of Adelaide, a Master of Economics from the Australian National University, and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Adelaide. His research focuses on Macroeconomics, Monetary Theory, Regional Development, and Social Theory, with a critical engagement with orthodox economic frameworks and a strong emphasis on heterodox approaches like Modern Monetary Theory (MMT).
Juniper has extensive academic experience, including roles as a Lecturer at the University of Newcastle (since 2003) and the University of South Australia (1990–2003). His professional background includes policy roles in the South Australian government, focusing on economic analysis and industrial development.
His research interests span critical economic theory, institutional practice, and the integration of macroeconomic policy with regional development. He has authored/co-authored books on topics like the economic philosophy of the IoT and has published widely in journals such as the Journal of Post Keynesian Economics and Technological Forecasting and Social Change. His work critiques conventional economic models and explores alternatives like MMT, emphasizing policy sovereignty and fiscal responses to crises.
Juniper has secured over $77,064 in grants, including a Strategic Networks Grant for research on Religion, Marxism, and Secularism (2015). He has supervised 15 PhD students, focusing on topics like macroeconomic policy, financial fragility, and technology interaction. His research also extends to environmental economics, sustainable development, and the dynamics of technological systems in global markets.
