James Hutchinson is a Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for the BA (Hons) Fine Art and MA Fine Art Pathway at the University of Sunderland. He also supervises PhD students, including serving as a second supervisor for Mike Glover. His research explores digital art practices, merging traditional media (drawing, painting, sculpture) with digital tools and AI. Recent exhibitions include works in Berlin, Paris, and the Slovak Republic under titles like '#nfcdab' and 'AI Artist, Title + Celebrity'.
Teaching Responsibilities include leading modules such as ART381 Exhibition Module and ART280 Fine Art and Society. He actively uses social media platforms like @sunderlandfineart and @mafineartsunderland to showcase student work, alongside the Shaun Project Space. His practice spans physical and digital realms, with installations involving 3D printing, VR, and sound art.
Notable contributions include inclusion in the REF21 Data Block: Post-Punk Remix and collaborations on public art projects addressing environmental themes, such as the 2022 'We Stand with Ukraine' exhibition and 2018 'Setting sail to drown out plastic pollution' initiative.
