James Helland

James Helland is an Assistant Professor at the School of Communication and Journalism at South Dakota State University (SDSU). With 27 years of experience in the newspaper industry, he has held roles such as sports writer, news reporter, and editor across outlets like the Sioux Falls Argus Leader and Las Vegas Review-Journal. He transitioned to academia full-time in 2013 after serving as an adjunct professor at SDSU and Augustana University.

• Education: B.A. and M.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication from SDSU.

His teaching focuses on newswriting, public affairs reporting, media law, and digital media. He advises the Journalism Club and collaborates with South Dakota media outlets. Notably, he received the 2015-2016 Teacher of the Year award from the College of Arts and Sciences.
