معرفی
James Heffernan is an Associate Professor of Ecosystem Ecology and Ecohydrology at Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment, serving as Director of Graduate Studies for the University Program in Ecology and Chair of Terrestrial and Freshwater Environments. His research focuses on ecosystem structure dynamics in streams, rivers, and wetlands, emphasizing feedbacks among ecological, physical, and biogeochemical processes. He applies interdisciplinary tools to address environmental challenges and scale ecological patterns from local to continental scales.
Education:
Ph.D., Arizona State University (2007)
Research Interests:
Dr. Heffernan investigates urban and natural ecosystem interactions, wetland resilience, water resource management, and biogeochemical cycles. His work bridges basic ecological theory and applied environmental solutions, including studies on coastal marshes, river networks, and residential macrosystems. Recent projects explore how urbanization impacts ecosystem services and how landscape-scale processes influence wetland distributions.
Grants & Collaborations:
- NSF-funded studies on river respiration regimes and residential macrosystems
- Research on coastal marsh resilience and sediment delivery mechanisms
- Collaborations with institutions like the Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences and EPFL (Switzerland)
Labs & Teams:
He leads the Heffernan Lab, which fosters interdisciplinary research and graduate training. The lab engages in fieldwork across North Carolina, the Everglades, and international sites, emphasizing spatial and temporal dynamics in ecosystems.
