Dr. James Freund is a Lecturer in Marketing at Lancaster University Management School (LUMS), Lancaster University. His research focuses on Earth-human relations, examining how organizations and individuals influence and are influenced by environmental changes, particularly within the Anthropocene epoch. Combining ontology, Terror Management Theory, and psychodynamics of power, his trans-disciplinary work analyzes organizational image conflicts to promote sustainable interactions between humans, institutions, and the biosphere.
Qualifications include a BSc in Psychology (Hull University), MA in Creative Writing (Lancaster), and PhD in Creative Writing (Lancaster). Prior to academia, he worked in civil society organizations like Earth 2000 and Greenpeace, alongside corporate roles at Titanium International, BT, and FCB, focusing on environmental impact reduction.
Current research supervision includes Jiahui Zhao (studying veganism and meat-eating psychology) and former student Dr. Erik Jacobi (now at Essex University). He holds editorial roles in journals such as Management Learning, Culture and Organization, and Journal of Business Ethics.
Key awards include academic prizes for top performance in Psychology during his undergraduate years. He contributes to research groups like the Centre for Technological Futures and collaborates with the Pentland Centre for Sustainability.
